Top Tips for Transitioning Military from Hawaii Transition Summit 2016

Top Tips for Transitioning Military from Hawaii Transition Summit 2016Top Tips for Transitioning Military from Hawaii Transition Summit 2016Top Tips for Transitioning Military from Hawaii Transition Summit 2016Schofield Barracks, October 16, 2016 President, www.resume-place.comOctober 27, 2016Resume Place, inc. online forum and message board for discussion of issues in the field of resume writing, career development and federal employment.Kathryn Troutman, known as the Federal Resume Guru, was prepared for a large auditorium presentation of Ten Steps to a Federal Job on Monday October 16th. The Nehelani Convention Center was filled, and the transitioning veterans were very interested in the Ten Steps to one of the best careers in America- a Civil tafelgeschirr Career. The Top Tips that Kathryn shared and the transitioning veterans heard includeStart 120 days ahead of transitioning out of the militaryStart your federal job search 120 days out from your terminal leave or separation / retirement. In order to apply for federal positions before you have a DD 214, get a Statement of Separation from your Executive Officer. This will state the date you will be available for employment in the government. Many military personnel in the class were 5 days, 6 months, 18 months away from separation, but they were all interested in the steps to a federal job after their military career.Use the USAJOBS BuilderUse the USAJOBS builder, instead of the Resume Upload feature in USAJOBS. This will save a lot of problems for yourself and for the Human Resources reviewers. The builder will steer you through WHAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED in the federal resume. Often transitioning military will upload their two-page private sector resume into the USAJOBS document section. This can result in ineligibility due to the lack of specific information needed by federal HR, such as month and years of employment (back at least ten years) supervisors names and phones street addresses, cities, states, z ip codes and country. This info must be in a federal resume, but elend necessarily your private sector resume.Dont use your two-page private sector resumeDont use the two-page resume that you wrote for private sector and maybe for your GPS TAP program. That resume is too short. The average private sector resume is 2 pages. The average federal resume is 3 to 5 pages in length. Your current position in the military should be ONE PAGE IN LENGTH. This will be your fruchtwein important position on the resume. The HR specialist will review those duties and responsibilities carefully against the job announcement.Write a three- to five-page narrative resumeWrite a narrative resume format. Kathryn Troutman recommends her Outline Format, which consists of small paragraphs (5 to 10 lines long), narrative statements, including a headline of 3 to 7 ALL CAP KEYWORDS. These keywords match the specialized experience and KSAs in the job announcement. And the HR specialists can landsee the match betw een the resume and the announcement in seconds. The narrative writing style provides more details about a skill set for the HR specialist and the manager.Staying in the same career? If you are staying your same career field from military to private sector, refer to www.mil2fedjobs.com. You can type in your service, rank and MOC, and this system will take you in seconds to REAL, live USAJOBS federal positions that will match your MOC. You can even organize results by salary / grade level and geographic location. This is very fast and efficient.Changing career direction? If you are a military transitioning member who wants to change your career from military MOC to a different civilian career, then you will need to go to school to build a new set of skills and knowledge and/or translate your military experience in to the transferrable skills needed for the new career. Dont go into details in your past military experience that will not be RECENT AND RELEVANT FOR THE HR REVIEWER. In the J obseekers Guide 7th Edition, the textbook for Ten Steps to a Federal Job, author Kathryn Troutman two samples of career change military federal resume in the Outline Format with narrative writing style and ALL CAP KEYWORDS. Both resumes are from successful federal jobseekers transitioning from the military.Add accomplishmentsAdd accomplishments to your resume. There is nothing worse than a BORING RESUME. If your resume is written just about your duties and responsibilities, and you do not add any accomplishments to the resume, it will be boring and feature only the basics of your job duties. This will not be enough to get best qualified, referred to a supervisor, and offered an interview. You MUST think about the extra added value that you brought to your military service. You must learn to brag about your strengths and achievements to get referred and interviewed. The HR reviewers are looking for outstanding candidates to forward to a supervisor. The supervisory may receive 10 to 1 5 resumes on their desk. You want to be on the desk of a supervisorBegin your federal job search earlyDo not wait until you walk out the door with your DD 214. You can start 120 days ahead of your transitioning date. Use this valuable time to study jobs, agencies, and missions. Work on your resume. Set up your UAJOBS account. Upload required documents. And set up Saved Searches and Saved Jobs. The federal job search- based on the Ten Steps to a Federal Job- will take three to six months if you are determined and persevering and think ahead.Get helpDont try to guess how to navigate USAJOBS and write a federal resume. Get a copy of Kathryn Troutmans Jobseekers Guide 7th Edition for samples of good, competitive federal resume samples. You can attend a Ten Steps to a Federal Job class at most military bases in the Employment Readiness offices. There are Certified Federal Job Search Trainers and Certified Federal Career Coaches at most military service transition offices. How Facebook is redefining mental health acceptance at work

How Facebook is redefining mental health acceptance at workHow Facebook is redefining mental health acceptance at workTo honor Mental Health Awareness Month, Facebooks New York City office hosted the cast and lead producer of the Tony Award-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen, as well as other mental health experts, for two panel discussions one focused on mental health in children and teens and one centered around mental health in the workplace. Influential in the creation of these panel discussions was Renee Albert, director of Facebooks Life, otherwise known as the social media moguls benefits program.During Alberts chat with Ladders, she gave insight into how Facebook is moving beyond what a company should be providing for its employees and diving into what it can offer to solve employees issues and make work even more enjoyable.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIt really isnt th at much to give back and when you give in ways like thatyour people show up in such a different way because they actually feel like theyre cared about, Albert said. Thats ultimately how we define our benefits.Facebook has three core principles for its mental health strategy increasing awareness, improving access to care, and creating peer-to-peer support.Albert explained each principle to Ladders, outlined below, but encouraged any company leader who is looking to improve its mental health strategy to reach out to Facebooks Life department for advice.Facebook is working to increase awareness and reduce stigma for mental healthThe ultimate goal of this first principle is to get to a place where employees feel comfortable talking about mental health issues in the workplace.A lot of it is around the culture and having a culture where people arent going to be penalized for having the conversation, Albert said.An important anfangsbuchstabe step is to have key players who are willing and brave enough to share their stories first. With such a large team, it was important for Facebook to create a platform where employees from different seniority levels and offices around the world would feel comfortable sharing their mental health stories. That diversity of allowing people to share that started to then make it really safe so we just had this natural flow of people starting to say You know, I really want to open up, Albert said.Fittingly enough, Facebook used OpenUp as their tagline to encourage their employees to share their mental health battles, coping mechanisms, and success stories.Facebook is improving access to quality careThe first part of improving access to quality care is providing employees with the flexibility to obtain quality care. Facebook doesnt promote working from home but encourages employees to work the hours that best suit them, including allowing them to easily shift their schedule in order to attend a therapy session or doctors appointment. The se cond facet of improving access to quality care lies in actually providing employees with helpful care plans. While many employers offer three free therapy sessions to employees, Facebook doesnt believe that is enough to actually figure out the root of an employees issue. Instead, Facebook partners with a mental health provider called leier to provide each dependent with 25 therapy sessions at no cost. Were landseeing that people are actually using that benefit, but were seeing lower productivity costswere seeing presenteeism, Albert said. So, were getting all of that back because people are happy to be at work and theres a sense of well-being.In addition to offering 25 free sessions, Facebooks Menlo Park office in California always has 12 or 13 on-site counselors. The counselors werent originally a part of Lyras network, but Facebook worked with the provider to get the on-site counselors covered for their employees. We as a benefits team within an organization are responsible for rede fining the marketplace and trying to do that in innovative ways, Albert said. We have that opportunity to see if it works, and when it does work, we have a responsibility to share that back with other employers to bring them along.Facebook is using the workplace community to create peer-to-peer supportIn an effort to create a culture of openness, Facebook turned to Workplace, an online team collaboration tool created by Facebook. September 2017 saw the launch of Facebooks OpenUp campaign, which encouraged employees to share their mental health stories, struggles, and successes in a company-wide group. This group was such a hit that it sparked the creation of smaller internal groups for people at Facebook that were facing or had faced similar struggles in life. The groups gave employees the opportunity to find support, show up as an ally, and ask other people to share their stories, Albert said.Rafi Romero, a Lead Software Engineer at Facebook, was one of the initial employees to shar e his story in the group after wanting to be upfront about his mental health issues at work for a long time.My experience with OpenUp turned out to be one of the fruchtwein terrifying and equally one of the most liberating things Ive ever done, Romero said. I dont think it was a coincidence that it was both of those things.Alberts three-prong approach for smaller companiesCreate focus groups and figure out the actual issues. Albert suggests that employers create focus groups and challenge employees to discuss the actual problem that they need solutions for.Dont be afraid to redefine what quality care looks like. Albert suggests looking at options to partner with vendors in the marketplace. By partnering with Lyra, Facebook is able to provide increased access to quality care to its employees.Influence senior leaders to create a culture that allows people to open the discussion.Albert pointed out that employees are already having conversations about mental health, they might just be a fraid to bring that topic into the office. Were naturally having that conversation, we just need to make it safe in the workplace, Albert said. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Use Social Media to Build a Personal Brand and Stand Out from the Crowd

Use Social Media to Build a Personal Brand and Stand Out from the CrowdUse Social Media to Build a Personal Brand and Stand Out from the Crowd We live in an increasingly transparent world, with access to people like weve never had before. Dont believe me? Go ahead and login to Twitter and send a tweet to Sir Richard Branson, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lady Gaga herself.Social media removes many of the access barriers weve traditionally dealt with in previous years. As an employee, if your CEO is active on social media (which they all should be), you can reach him or her in an instant. That great idea you wanted to share or important business connection youve wanted to make may have taken months of work to initiate in the past, can now be accomplished quickly through a tweet, status post, video and/or GIF.Like it or not, social media is here to stay. It also happens to be the best place to build your personal brand .I know thats easy for me to say I live and breathe social as part of my job daily but I truly believe it. Truth is, the sooner you realize you can, and should, have a personal brand, the better. The term personal branding was first thought to be used and discussed in a 1997 article by Tom Peters . Just as a business uses branding to create a unique name or image for a product or service, you too can use branding to position yourself as a thought leader and move ahead in your career. The trick is getting people to pay attention to your content and making your profile stand out amongst all the digital noise. Here are a few of my personal tips, strategies and suggestions I use when working with individuals or organizations on their social media and brand presence. So, you binnensee the value in social media and want to dedicate your time here to build your personal brand great Now what? Do you create an account on every social media platform? Wrong A sure-fire way to fail on this social journey is to start too broadly on too many platforms.I nstead, I recommend starting small and deciding on one or two platforms to become proficient with before adding another one. Doing social media well takes some effort, and if youre spread too thin, it can be discouraging to see people not engaging with your content immediately.Do yourself a favor and conduct some research to learn all the tips and tricks to effectively utilizing the social platform of your choice. This is also the perfect time to ask yourself what, where, when and how . For example, if youre a blogger, you might consider Twitter as your first social media network to tackle. On the other hand, Id recommend a photographer start with an Instagram account.Answering some of tough questions up front can save you some heartache later.Youve heeded my advice and conducted some research to determine the best social media networks to start small with. The next step is clear begin posting regular content to build out your social profile. However, whats not so clear is deciding what you want to post but it doesnt have to be. Curating content , defined as the act of sorting through large amounts of content on the web and presenting the best posts in a meaningful and organized way, is a simple strategy to start building your personal brand. To find this great content, you can follow other thought leaders in your space or subscribe to industry blogs and newsletters.Theres vast amounts of content being created and published every day. By sharing with others what you find valuable and interesting, you can start defining your voice, building your personal brand and showing others that you know whats happening in your industry. When I first started out using my social media presence for more than cute pictures of my children (and trust me, theyre cute), I had no idea what to write or, maybe more importantly, why anyone would care. However, after I had a good grasp on curated content, I was inspired to create some original content. It was time to join in on the dig ital conversation by sharing my own thoughts and ideas.Digital marketing and social media pioneer Gary Vaynerchuk has built a hugely successful empire by creating valuable content. In his best-selling book Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook , he says, Creating content that allows us to share our experiences, thoughts, and ideas in real time is becoming an intrinsic part of life in the twenty-first century. When creating original content, determine what naturally excites you and just start . Writing is like any muscle, it needs to be worked out to be at full strength. Just remember, the key to successful content is authenticity. Finally, youve decided what social media network to focus on, curated content and even started creating your own original content. Some stop here, but the real experts realize the work is done after you click post. The final, and maybe most crucial step, is to engage with your audience. If youve built a following, that means you have a group of people who have virtuall y raised their hand and said theyre interested in what you have to say. Never take that for granted dont let them down. After all, the first word in social media is socialWhen people share your content, thank them. When they comment on your content, start a conversation with them. Today, most social media networks have the functionality to like a comment. Never underestimate the power of clicking that heart or like button. There you have it, my secret sauce to social media Decide ? Curate ? Create ? Engage. A robust social media presence and authentic personal brand wont happen overnight. However, with a little persistence and a developed game plan, you too can use social media to build your personal brand and stand out from the crowd.Chris Skaggs is the head of talent and brand at TSP , a privately-held IT services company, and co-founder and president of Leightons Gift , a non-profit with a mission of turning a tragedy into something positive. The Limits of Loyalty in the Workplace

The Limits of Loyalty in the Workplace The Limits of Loyalty in the Workplace Loyalty binds friendships andholds teams together but it does have its limits. Many of us were taught to be loyal to our employers. To some degree, this makes sense. We should all be truthful, we should keep trade secrets private, and we should put in an honest days work when were at the office. We have a duty to be great employees each and every day.In the past, loyalty at work also brought with it a number of great rewards. Job security was a given.Hard work and commitment resulted in promotions and raises.Years of service guaranteed a comfortable retirement. Putting the companys needs first also meant putting our own needs first, in a way.Today, times have changed. Without blaming one side or abedrngnisher, its fair to acknowledge that vergammeln workplaces are not built on loyalty they way they used to be. Its no longer unusual for companies to restructure and/or cut entire departments with no notice. Its also not unusual for companies to look to outside talent to save the day when things go wrong. This new business climate puts us all at increased risk of losing our jobs at some point in our careers, no matter how loyal we areto our employers. Italso makes internal promotions and pay raises more unlikely as more and more companies make outside hires instead. So, what can you do about this new environment?First, keep being a great employee each and every day. You are your own personal brand. You dont want to be any less valuable as an employee just because times have changed.Second, focus on your long-term goals. Where do you want to be in 5or 10 years? As you work to achieve your goals, pay attention to whether or not your company is supporting those goals. If you are being overlooked for promotions and raises, the company is sending you a signal. For whatever reason, it is not aligned with your goals. Your future success depends on accepting this unfortunate fact.Expand your netwo rk and begin searching for a company that does align with your personal goals. When you switch companies, youll have a chance to renegotiate your salary and your title. That means instead of settling fora 2 percent raise this year, you could earn a 10 percent boost or more.At the end of the day, keep yourself and your future in mind. Dont sacrifice your own dreams because you want to be loyal to an organization. After all that employer wouldnt hesitate to let you go if it needed to save some money.A version of this article originally appeared in theMemphis Daily News.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm,Copeland Coaching.
